Information about the scientific library
“S. J. The history of the library of the Kazakh National Medical University named after Asfendiyarov begins with the opening of the medical institute in 1931 with about 6000 thousand copies.
The mission of the library is aimed at supporting the educational process and scientific research at the educational institution by creating the necessary conditions for rapid access to library resources and world information resources.
S. J. 30.01.2014 of the rector of KazNMU named after Asfendiyarov. On the basis of Order No. 354 L, the library was granted the status of Scientific Library in 2014.
Fund of educational, methodological and scientific literature
The library stock contains 1,424,643 copies of reading and scientific literature: books, dissertations, abstracts, periodicals in the state, Russian and foreign languages. Among them, the stock of electronic textbooks is 13,283 copies, including: electronic books – 9,015 copies, electronic books in PDF format – 4,268 titles. Every year, monitoring is carried out to organize subscription to periodicals. In 2022, subscription to 92 titles of newspapers and magazines of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation was carried out. The scientific library fund is updated according to the requests for the purchase of literature received from the departments of universities.
Rare stock
Rare collection of the scientific library of the 18th-19th centuries. consists of 3,851 pieces of literature on dated medicine, including Brockhaus and Efron encyclopedias.
Preparation
KazNMU library is located at 153 Bogenbay Batyr street; It is located on the 4th floor of educational building No. 2. These are modern renovated rooms equipped with modern furniture and necessary appliances.
The library consists of 5 sections:
- Collection and scientific processing of literature, cataloging department;
- Reference-bibliographic section;
- Scientific and methodological department;
- Department of automation and electronic resources – 2 e-learning halls: Internet hall for 54 seats (2nd floor) and e-learning hall for 42 seats (4th floor). The scientific library has 89 computers, 1 laptop, 2 video projectors, 3 screens for various events, duplicating and duplicating equipment – 1 semi-automatic scanner, 9 printers.

Service delivery
Library services to readers are differentiated in five subscriptions: 1st year subscription – 1 floor, 2nd-3rd year subscription – 2nd floor, 4th-5th year subscription – 3rd floor, for 6th-7th year students, graduate students, residents, professors scientific literature subscription – 3 floors.
In order to expand the scope of assistance to library users, the Library operates a night subscription.
Also, a study hall is open from 17:30 to 21:30 near dormitory No. 8.
Thus, the scientific library works according to the principle “Library – 24 hours a day”.
In 2021, an order was issued to transfer the Scientific Library from traditional paper catalogs to electronic catalogs. In addition, the necessary material in the paper version of 17 card files can now be found in the electronic catalog of the KABIS program.
In order to determine the real availability of library publications and materials in accordance with the existing guidelines and qualification requirements that regulate the activities of libraries of higher education institutions, as well as in order to free up places in the book storage for the placement of new collections of literature, a large-scale work has begun to check the entire library stock.
The scientific library pays a lot of attention to the provision of information and bibliographic services: “Information days”, “Department days”, exhibition viewing, creation of recommended and scientific-assistant lists of literature, execution of written and oral thematic references.
Information bulletins are issued as new literature is received, and information in the form of a virtual exhibition of new receipts is placed on the website of KazNMU. S. D. Asfendiarova.
The scientific library actively participates in all activities of the university: readers’ conferences, discussions, meetings with interesting people. Book exhibitions, stands, thematic bibliographic reviews are held in all these areas.
New entries
The scientific library adopted the experience of the Scientific Library of Nazarbayev University and introduced the work of a subject librarian.
The subject librarian acts as an intermediary between schools/faculties and the library; the approved librarian advises students on the POC and uses the possibilities of advertising and social media networks (university website, libraries, mail.ru, Facebook).
The library uses the “KABIS” automated library system, which is specially developed for library processes, including automation of library processes and providing remote access to the electronic catalog fund via the Internet.
The electronic catalog of the library is available to all categories of users of KazNMU through the web page ( http://lib.kaznmu.kz ).
Since 2016, KazNMU has started work on the implementation of the new “Sirius” program, which combines all the processes of the structural units of the university in an automated mode.
Conversion of scientific library electronic catalog from KABIS program to Sirius “Library – electronic catalog” Module was carried out.
On the basis of the Sirius program, automated service of “return-delivery” of documents was introduced at all delivery points. Barcodes were given to educational literature of all Schools.
“UDK-online” service was also introduced, i.e. the reader has the possibility to send an article for issuing UDC, BBK or MRNTI numbers without going to the library through his personal account.
Work is carried out on the analysis of teachers’ articles published in the Scopus and Web of Science databases; appendices 2 and 8 are created on the analysis of book supply of subjects for the accreditation of specialties; Also, work is carried out to confirm the presence of articles of the Higher Education Center in Kazakhstan and Russian peer-reviewed medical journals. (KKSON, RINZ, WAC).
In the Sirius module “Library”: there is an electronic catalog of the library, through which users can find the necessary literature, as well as read it in full-text format. Access to all Sirius library services is provided through individual student offices.
In the online mode, the library regularly communicates with students: video presentations on electronic resources have been posted, a survey is planned to study their needs, all events and reference information are posted on Facebook. Information for readers is placed on the website of the library, which will be supplemented as it is updated.
Electronic resources
The library fund of KazNMU is also universal in that it consists of documents placed on remote technical devices.

Employees of the Department of Automation and Electronic Resources made a video clip in the state and Russian languages on the topic “Electronic Resources of the Scientific Library of KazNMU” using the Bandicam program. The video provides information on how to use electronic resources in the “Library – electronic resources” module in Sirius. The video can be accessed by students and teachers. Also, online and offline training seminars on “Electronic resources of the Scientific Library of KazNMU” are held every month for all schools/faculties of the university.

The scientific library has contracts on mutual cooperation with libraries and organizations of Kazakhstan:
- Agreement on cooperation with the Scientific Library of the Kazakh National Pedagogical University named after Abay dated May 25, 2018.
- Almaty Memorandum on cooperation No. 891/08.20 of August 17, 2020 with the Higher Medical College of DB.
- Memorandum on cooperation with the Military Institute of the Ground Forces of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated August 2, 2017.
